The story is a good and not a surprising one, for anyone who knows Nazi and German history。But the book is an enjoyable read。 。。。more

I loved it。 The book made me laugh, it made me cry, it just made me feel such a multitude of emotions。 Reading it, I saw the beauty and the ugliness of this world。 It was amazing。

This novel has moved me in a way I didn't think possible。 I adored the narrator's voice。 Having death be the narrator was a really beautiful choice, it's a perfect 3rd person omniscient perspective。 The opening prologue was fantastic and had me hooked。 A must-read for WWII history buffs, veterans, and every human person on earth。 I can't recommend it enough。 This novel has moved me in a way I didn't think possible。 I adored the narrator's voice。 Having death be the narrator was a really beautiful choice, it's a perfect 3rd person omniscient perspective。 The opening prologue was fantastic and had me hooked。 A must-read for WWII history buffs, veterans, and every human person on earth。 I can't recommend it enough。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book, though it was a little hard to get into at first with the narrator leading the dialogue。 I'm always intrigued by the strength and determination it took for those that lived through wartime to not only survive but come out the other side with such positivity in so many ways。 The lessons about how easy it can be to follow the crowd and not see the warning signs until it may be too late are still applicable today and a good reminder that we need to always stick with what I really enjoyed this book, though it was a little hard to get into at first with the narrator leading the dialogue。 I'm always intrigued by the strength and determination it took for those that lived through wartime to not only survive but come out the other side with such positivity in so many ways。 The lessons about how easy it can be to follow the crowd and not see the warning signs until it may be too late are still applicable today and a good reminder that we need to always stick with what is right and just - even if it goes against the mass mentality we are surrounded by。 。。。more

Only problem with this book was that I felt some events/information didn't add much value to the book and could have been avoided。 But still, it made me feel things that I frankly don't know how I will recover from。 I have read this book in pieces over few months, but everytime I started after a break, I was still able to immerse myself into the storyline without any need for revision。 This is something which I liked most the writing, similar to "All the light we cannot See"。 Only problem with this book was that I felt some events/information didn't add much value to the book and could have been avoided。 But still, it made me feel things that I frankly don't know how I will recover from。 I have read this book in pieces over few months, but everytime I started after a break, I was still able to immerse myself into the storyline without any need for revision。 This is something which I liked most the writing, similar to "All the light we cannot See"。 。。。more

Beautifully writtenWonderfully sad story of love and loss in the second world war。 Really enjoyable read, the author brilliantly captures the fear and suspicion whilst living in Germany under the Nazi regime。

Excellent! Brilliant and original writing style。 The story and the telling of it was captivating。 There were times that I made me pause and reflect on the meanings, depth and emotion of what I was reading。 A brilliant piece of history, that should not be left unread。

I found this book quite difficult to get into, as the style of the prologue and the early part of the book seems almost designed to keep a distance between the reader and the protagonist。 While this does continue to some extent, with the interjections from Death which break up the narrative and tell the reader what is coming, once the story settles in to focus on Liesel and life on Himmel Street it improves greatly。It is an easy book to read and yet it packs a hefty emotional punch。 The end left I found this book quite difficult to get into, as the style of the prologue and the early part of the book seems almost designed to keep a distance between the reader and the protagonist。 While this does continue to some extent, with the interjections from Death which break up the narrative and tell the reader what is coming, once the story settles in to focus on Liesel and life on Himmel Street it improves greatly。It is an easy book to read and yet it packs a hefty emotional punch。 The end left me feeling emotionally wrung out, and this was mostly because of Papa, whose character is written in such an extraordinarily beautiful way。 Liesel and Rudy are also well written and rounded characters which helps to bring depth and meaning to the story。 Some of the other characters - including Rosa - I felt were almost caricatures with some tacked on features which the reader is told about but not show。 This is unfortunate as they lacked the roundedness that Zusak is clearly capable of creating。Ultimately this is a story about love, friendships and families in all their forms, and the astonishing power of words to unite and divide us, a message which has perhaps became more relevant since its initial publication。 。。。more

I’ve never read a book that was written quite like this before。 The style of it was amazing to read and it completely entranced me。 The characters and their courage was a joy to read and I know that this is a book to be remembered。 Make sure that you have a box of tissues handy for that ending!

This was a riveting story。 Two things that I did not appreciate were the swearing and the choppiness of the format。
